Prof. Prakash G. Apte served as the Director of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) from October 2002 to October 2007. After serving as Dean, he assumed the role of Director from Professor M. R. Rao and was succeeded by Professor Pankaj Chandra. He retired as a Professor in the Economics and Social Sciences area in 2012.
Dr. Apte joined IIM Bangalore in September 1977, shortly after completing his PhD in Economics from Columbia University. While he initially taught courses in Economics, Econometrics, and Macroeconomics, he later expanded his teaching portfolio to include International Finance, Financial Derivatives, and Financial Risk Management.
Prior to his academic career, he worked with the Edison Electric Institute, Ingersoll-Rand, and the Centron Industrial Alliance. At IIMB, he held the UTI Chair in Finance and Research as well as the Chair of Capital Market Studies and Risk Management.
Professor Apte has taught at leading universities in Belgium, France, Portugal, Sweden, and Australia. He chaired the SEBI Secondary Market Advisory Committee and served as a member of the Index Committee of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the DICGIL Advisory Committee. He was also an External Director on the governing boards of Power Finance Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), and GMR Infrastructure.
He served as Chairman of the Academic Council of the CFA programme offered by ICFAI and was a member of the Trustee Board of UTI Mutual Fund. Dr. Apte has authored four books and published several articles in professional journals and economic and financial periodicals. In addition, he has undertaken consulting assignments for leading corporate organizations, including Ernst & Young, Wipro, Commerzbank, GroupM, HDFC, and the State Bank of India.
