Uday Suresh Kotak (born 15 March 1959) is an Indian banker and founder of Kotak Mahindra Bank, where he currently serves as a non-executive director. Uday Kotak was born in Mumbai on March 15, 1959, into an upper-middle-class Gujarati Hindu Lohana family involved in cotton trading. He grew up in a large joint family, in a home with 60 people living under one roof. He referred to this as "Capitalism at work and Socialism at home." His two pastimes were cricket and playing the sitar. In a 2014 interview with NDTV, he admitted that he no longer played the sitar. His talent in mathematics shaped his choice of career. He earned a bachelor's degree from Sydenham College and completed a postgraduate degree in management studies in 1982 from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies.
