Memories:
IIM Calcutta was founded on November 14th 1961 in association with the Sloan School of Management, MIT, USA. In 1962 a senior executive development programme was held in Darjeeling.
From March 1963, a 9-month Junior Executive Development Programme was conducted for working executives who had to qualify for participating in this by writing an exam. Mr Govind Bhagat was an executive with Metal Box India Ltd who nominated him for this programme. He appeared for the entrance exam for the JEDP which he topped.
The batch of 18 students were from various corporates, some of who are given below:
- Tata Steel
- GKW
- Metal Box
- KCT Group
- Rollsprint
No campus, no hostel. Such were the beginnings of this august institution. Accommodation was provided in the housing facilities of the Air Force Base at Barrackpore where the classes were also held. Mess arrangements were also made there with catering services being provided by Mocambo, the well-known Park Street Restaurant, which was quite a treat. Use of the Barrackpore Club facilities for games and other activities were made available to the participants during their leisure time.
The programme was pretty rigorous with day-long classroom sessions followed by assignments to be completed at home. Mr Bhagat recalls that this programme was a great learning experience for him which stood him well in his career. Some of the faculty he could recall were
- Prof Ishwar Dayal
- Director K.T.Chandy
- Dr Ashok Mitra
- Prof King
